BUILDING KENWORTH GLIDER KITS JUST BECAME EASIER

Kenworth Glider Kit Engine Installation Harnesses now available from Kustom Truck

Kenworth Glider Kit Assembly parts kits now available from Kustom Truck

Kustom Harness is proud to introduce a line of engine control harnesses and assembly parts kits for application in Paccar glider kit trucks.  These engine control harnesses and assembly parts kits were engineered, proto-typed, and developed for installation of a PRE-EMISSION Caterpillar, Cummins, or Detroit Engine into the current production Peterbilt and Kenworth glider kit trucks.  The Kustom glider kit harnesses allow for a true plug and play electronic engine installation into the OEM chassis with no dash interface, harness modifications, or workarounds required. For applications that use a Caterpillar ADEM 2 (40 Pin), Cummins Celect +, and Detroit DDEC3/4/5 electronic engines also require a Kustom Processor Unit in addition to the engine control harness.

The development of the Kustom glider kit harnesses and Glider assembly parts kits are the result of 15 years of building gliders kit trucks, performing engine swaps between the different engine families, and engine upgrades from mechanical to electronic engines in older trucks. This experience exposed the need for an OEM quality electronic engine interface harness that would allow customers to efficiently install the engine of their choice into a glider kit while ensuring the reliability, serviceability, and quality of the glider kit truck.

All of the harnesses were designed with service and support after sale in mind, even down to the fine details such as the OEM circuit numbers on the individual wires. The result is a more efficient build, a product that is easier to support after sale through the OEM dealer network, and an overall higher quality end product out the door.

The Kustom Coolant Distribution Manifold is a water manifold to route all your heater hoses through one centralized location. One of the benefits of the manifold is to clean up the engine compartment by only having one main supply and one main return line that connects to the coolant ports on the engine, rather than have multiple hoses running to the engine. Another benefit of the manifold is that it utilizes shutoff valves at the manifold for each circuit that are being ran so in the event of a coolant leak, the valve can simply shut off the leaking circuit and continue to run until the hose can be replaced.

There are two versions of the manifold; either a three or five port circuit is available. The base model is a 3 circuit manifold that allows you to run up to 3 individual coolant circuits. There is also an upgraded model that allows for up to 5 circuits to be plumbed in. Should your application not require the use of all available circuits, the unused ones can simply be plugged. Some common circuits that the Kustom Coolant Distribution Manifold is used for are the Cab and Sleeper Heaters, Transmission Cooler, Fuel Tank Heater as well as the Auxiliary Power Unit (APU). The Kustom Coolant Distribution Manifold is sold as a kit that includes the manifold, shutoff valves, hose barb fittings, elbows, and plugs. The Kustom Manifold is not chassis specific meaning it can be utilized on a Freightliner, Peterbilt, Volvo, Mack, Western Star, International or Kenworth trucks and can be used on medium or heavy duty applications.

A factory re-man Caterpillar engine allows customers with older trucks the option of new truck engine warranty rather than limited overhaul warranty coverage. The OEM re-man Cat is also the perfect choice for the exploding Glider Kit Truck market.

With the recent surge in Glider Kit Truck sales, the option for a factory re-man Caterpillar engine is very appealing. A Glider Kit Truck is the only way a customer can install a pre-emission engine in a current production chassis. Caterpillar 1999 EPA certified C-15 and C-16 Cat engines don’t require DPF or SCR integration unless the vehicle is operated in geographical areas that have mandated all trucks meet certain EPA standards. The benefit of the 1999 EPA Caterpillar OEM re-man engine is that the operator can typically count on superior fuel economy, proven performance, and better reliability as well as some less tangible benefits. Since the Glider Kit Truck is covered under new truck warranty from the respective manufacturer, it only makes sense to install an engine that has similar engine warranty.

Most customers don’t realize the advantage of a New Truck Engine Warranty compared to that of an overhaul engine warranty. All Caterpillar Factory re-man Engines qualify for a new truck engine warranty that covers the engine from flywheel to front cover. Depending on the specific CAT engine, the standard base warranty can range from 24 months to 36 months or 100,000 to unlimited miles. All Caterpillar Factory re-man engines have the option to add an ESC Plus warranty that can extend that coverage out to 60 months or 500,000 miles to include the Turbo, Water Pump and Injectors. The base warranty typically covers parts and labor as well as towing to the nearest authorized repair facility while the Cat ESC warranties cover parts and Labor.

On the other hand overhaul protection warranty (OPT warranty) is not as comprehensive as a re-man warranty. Although current OPT warranties can be extended out to 4 years in many cases eligible engines and component coverage is limited and doesn’t typically include engine parts such as sensors, harnesses, engine brakes, and ECM’s.

In addition to offering the OEM re-man engine assembly, Kustom Truck offers various engine up-fit kits (i.e. chassis installation brackets, fan hubs, ECM programming, and harnessing options) that can be specified with the purchase of the engine to insure that the customer receives an engine assembly that is ready to drop into the chassis for correct fitment as well as being electronically compatible with the chassis that the engine is installed in.

Kustom Truck also has the ability to provide the electronic interface between the engine and the chassis. Paccar Glider Kit Trucks (Peterbilt and Kenworth) typically do not provide engine control packages for current production engines with the glider kit. Kustom Truck has designed and offers an OEM engine control harness that connects the firewall connector to OEM connector on the Cat engine for any 99 – 2007 EPA Caterpillar engine with ADAM 3 or Adam 4 electronics including feeds for the a/c high pressure switch, fan solenoid, vehicle speed sensor, main power and ground to starter, clutch switch and low coolant level sensor.

Glider Kit Trucks are the new fad in heavy duty trucking.  The image of today’s glider kit trucks has changed drastically from what the public originally perceived.  The old way of thinking was to take your wrecked truck’s drive train and implant it into a new chassis giving the glider kit trucks a bad name.  People thought of them as an inferior product that simply used old components that were near the end of their useful life and installed them in a shiny new truck.

Today that couldn’t be further from the truth!  The emission standards have gotten more and more stringent over the last 6-8 years with the inclusion of DEF, SCR, Urea tanks just to make the engine meet the current standard.  The truck drivers are guaranteed more down time as a result of engine platforms that are not proven and less fuel economy to boot.  All of this equals a higher overall operating cost but the pay for those jobs has not increased if anything it’s gone down as a result of increased competition for the loads available.

Enter the current Glider Kit Truck, the market has increased exponentially recently as a result of what’s mentioned above.  Customers want to install the pre emission factory reman motors into the current production chassis.  Currently you are able to get a Glider Kit Truck from Peterbilt, Freightliner and Western Star.  Kenworth is also making a resurgence back into the market with two models for sure, possibly three.  They are expected to enter the market the 4th quarter of 2012 or the 1st quarter of 2013.  Interestingly enough the Paccar models (Kenworth and Peterbilt) supply engine control for the current production engine’s only!  This leaves engine control up to the dealer or the customer if they are assembling the truck themselves.  Talk about a headache and hours of shop labor!

Kustom Harness has you covered, no need to worry.   The Kustom harness allows the customer or dealer to install an engine from 2000 to current production in the chassis with a complete cradle to grave wire harness that plugs into the factory pin in the firewall and the engine ECM, with all associated feeds for engine hookup (a/c high pressure switch, fan solenoid, vehicle speed sensor, main power and ground to starter, clutch switch and low coolant level sensor).  The harness is available for CAT, Cummins or Detroit (coming soon) engine models.  The price depends on the level of installation being done anywhere from a complete engine control harness at $1,750.00 and up depending on the engine being used.

SKW located in Anchorage, Alaska placed a large order for Caterpillar engines.  The order was for 3406E Cat engines rated at 455 HP @ 1650 Torque to be used in Euclid Line haul trucks.  Since they were reman engines directly from Caterpillar the customer got a 2 year unlimited mileage warranty serial number specific in their name serviceable through any authorized Cat dealer.  Prior to leaving the Kustom Truck facility the Cat engines were up-fitted with all peripherals components as well as re-rated to 455 HP (a rating not available from the factory)

Kustom Truck was approached by RB Crushing, a division of Petro West that operates out of the Grande Prairie, Alberta Canada region to to build a pair of twin 2012 Peterbilt glider kit trucks model 389 to serve as lowboy’s.  The one stipulation about the trucks, could RB Crushing get a new Peterbilt glider kit truck with a non EGR engine.  The current production motors require engine REGEN and is simply is not working in this region.  A REGEN requires extreme high heat to clean the DPF filter and burn the carbon buildup that accumulates, a process that is extremely challenging with the cold weather experienced in Canada.  Not a problem for Kustom Truck, this is what we do!

The Peterbilt Glider Kit Trucks were brought in from the factory as rolling gliders with 46K lb rears sitting on Peterbilt Air Track suspension, 48″ flat top sleepers and platinum level interiors.  Kustom Truck spec’d out a drive train package to include a pre emission 2002 model Caterpillar C-16 engine rated 600 HP @ 2050 torque.  In order to handle the power output the Caterpillar engine put out, a Fuller transmission model RTLO-20918B was chosen.

The day the trucks showed up as rollling Peterbilt glider kit trucks piggybacked into the lot

The twin Caterpillar C-16 engines sitting on the Kustom Truck shop floor up-fitted with the peripherals (starter, alternator, fan hub, belts, ect) waiting to be dropped into the engine compartment.  The Fuller transmission is already bolted to the flywheel housing as well.

Both Caterpillar C-16 engines are now installed in the engine compartment and the electric plumbing has begun a lot of work yet to be completed before we fire these trucks up.

The Caterpillar C-16 engine are now plumbed for electrical and all engine piping is installed as well as the hoods are back on the the Peterbilt Glider Kit Trucks.

Now it’s time for the Kustom Truck shop to start on the extra goodies that the customer has requested in order for the fit and finish to be acceptable.  Here’s the list of custom options:

  • 11″ drop visor by Roadworks
  • accessory lights to include: breathers, side skirts, under cab and sleeper all LED lights by Roadworks
  • Diamond plate half fenders, step boxes, chain hangers and a custom headache rack by ProTech
  • 7″ exhaust system with muffler inserts by Dynaflex
  • A custom water manifold and ceramic detail package by Kustom Truck
  • The ceramic detail package included the jake stand, cam cover, dipstick and oil fill tubes, turbo lines, the turbo hot and cold housings, thermostat housing, exhaust manifold and heat shield
  • Custom polished stainless charge air cooler and radiator pipes by B & H Tubes

Now that the trucks are assembled, test drives are complete and the trucks are awaiting delivery to RB Crushing, Kustom Truck leaves you with these parting shots.
